Our Story

The Upper Missouri Watershed Alliance was founded by a group of concerned citizens, landowners, and conservationists who recognized the need for a dedicated organization to protect one of Montana's most treasured natural resources.

The Missouri River, from Holter Dam to Cascade, represents some of the finest trout fishing waters in North America. This stretch of river supports a diverse ecosystem of aquatic plants, insects, fish, and wildlife that depends on clean water and healthy riparian habitats.

Through scientific research, data collection, and community partnerships, UMOWA works to understand the factors that impact river health and advocates for evidence-based conservation practices. Our studies on aquatic vegetation, macroinvertebrates, and water quality provide valuable baseline data for monitoring the river's condition over time.

We believe that protecting the Upper Missouri River requires collaboration among all stakeholders—landowners, anglers, guides, government agencies, and concerned citizens. Together, we can ensure this remarkable river remains healthy and productive for generations to come.
