Streambank Restoration

Stabilizing the banks of the Upper Missouri River

Protecting Our River Banks

UMOWA is working with local landowners, private businesses, and public agencies to stabilize the river banks along the Missouri River. The initiative aims to decrease erosion and sediment buildup downstream.

By promoting woody plant growth and managing animal access points to the water, the organization seeks to enhance long-term river environmental health. Healthy streambanks are essential for water quality, fish habitat, and the overall ecological integrity of the Upper Missouri watershed.

Volunteers on the Bank

UMOWA volunteers and project partners work shoulder-to-shoulder on restoration sites along the Missouri, planting willows, setting erosion-control fencing, and rebuilding vegetated buffers that protect the river from sediment and runoff.

These hands-on workdays turn science-based restoration plans into living, functioning riverbank habitat — one plant and one post at a time.
